(Fantastically Amazing Questions)
Q. What occurs during your summer program?
A. The short answer is math! Our instructors go through what a student plans to learn within the first semester of the following school year in mathematics. Some review of the previous year, particularly at the younger levels, is usually incorporated into the first couple of weeks.
Q. How do you determine what to teach?
A. We are using the revised Indiana standards this year (as the state has scrapped Common Core) and are breaking down each year's mathematics into a series of "must-learns" (between 10 and 12, though this is subject to change) that will be posted on our website before the class begins. We want to show you exactly what we will be working on while also giving an example of each type of problem.
Q. How do you assess progress?
A. This year, for the first time, we are incorporating pre- and post-tests into all elementary and middle school grades. These help us gauge instruction and examine a student's progress in a given strain of mathematics. Both pre-tests and post-tests incorporate skills from the previous and current year. For example, a student going into seventh-grade will be taking a pre-test and post-test based on both sixth grade concepts and seventh-grade concepts focused on in the summer.
Q. Will there be homework?
A. Yes--but not too much! We want to make sure, however, that the children have time to reinforce what they've learned. We believe our "power practice" sheets are typically the best and most efficient way this is done. While homework is not required to be completed by the student, we recommend that--and will be reporting a completion percentage in our feedback forms at the end of the year.
Q. Is there any difference between the MW classes and the TR classes?
A. None at all. We plan to cover identical material on Monday and Tuesday and on Wednesday and Thursday. Therefore, if a student misses one of the classes, he or she can come to the other. Enrolling in one of our classes gives the student the opportunity to come to two classes a week.
Q. Can my child come to all four classes?
A. This is a possibility, though you will have to register him or her for two separate sections of the class. This will give your child a chance for additional exposure to the subject, though there will not be additional homework given (as the Monday homework and Tuesday homework, for example, would be identical).
Q. What if my child misses a class or goes on vacation for a week?
A. We understand the summer is a busy and exciting time. In the instance of a missed class, your child will still be receiving the notes and homework from the previous class and will be given. We will do our absolute utmost to ensure that your child will not fall behind. We recommend you give the instructor ample notice of this if it transpires, and then he or she can work out a catch-up plan.
Q. Will you really have cookies?
A. Yes. And they'll be delicious.
